The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.

It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies—is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.

We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings—even those regarded as enemies.

We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensible to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community.

On Friday, I saw the reader’s comments, I noticed the comments came from a school and I made the decision to call. The school used its server logs to track the comments, based on the time they were made, to a single work station. After confronting the employee, he resigned. Since then, I’ve heard the criticism, loud and clear.

The criticism of me falls largely in four categories. First, that I overreacted, using an atomic fly-swatter to address the issue. Second, that I somehow violated our privacy policy. Third, that I’ve set some sort of precedent for how we deal with readers who make obscene comments. And fourth, that I was gleeful or boastful in blogging about the incident in the first place.

In the wake of a few days of reflection, I would like to clear up some misinformation and offer some thoughts on what I’ve learned from this episode.

Did I reveal private information? No. I had none to reveal and wouldn’t have if I had it. From me, the school learned three things: 1) That the comments were posted; 2) When the comments were posted; 3) That I knew they came from the school based on the DNS information that accompanied the IP address. The school knows its own IP address. Knowing when the comments were posted allowed them to track them to a specific work station through its own server logs.

Yesterday, Tim O’Reilly published a provocatively titled post: “The War for the Web.“ In it he discusses the dangers to the web as an open platform from the attempts by the biggest players to own more and more of the user experience:

We’re heading into a war for control of the web. And in the end, it’s more than that, it’s a war against the web as an interoperable platform. Instead, we’re facing the prospect of Facebook as the platform, Apple as the platform, Google as the platform, Amazon as the platform, where big companies slug it out until one is king of the hill.

I share Tim’s concerns. If you have not read Tim’s post, go read it now! If you come back, here is some more food for thought.

Carriers are spending tons on lobbying against the FCC’s push for net neutrality. The irony here is that first the Internet and later the Web were conceived as entirely neutral by design. There was a clear separation between layers of the stack (web applications on top of Http on top of TCP/IP on top of whatever physical transport). This separation has been essential for allowing rapid innovation at all layers of the stack. Transport speeds have gone up hugely even at the local loop (FIOS anyone?) at the same time that we have gone from Geocities to Google Apps. Despite this tremendous success, carriers and now also some content companies are fighting the design because the open design is so powerful that it is destroying their existing business models.

Google is building its entire web stack by themselves. From custom hardware in their data centers all the way up to their own browser and most recently a proposal for a protocol to extend http (spdy). A lot of people inside of google have the best of intentions, but as we all know those pave the way to hell. It is a very small step from where google is today to a google that pushes everyone to use Chrome with spdy against google servers. If will of course all be in the name of “the best experience” for endusers. I wonder where I have heard that before.

For more examples of how small steps that all seem innocuous by themselves can lead us down the path towards a less open web, I suggest heading over to Chris Messina’s blog and reading “The death of the URL” (skip the obligatory Matrix reference at the top).

In a follow-up post I will share some thoughts on what to do about it.

CNN Worldwide VP of Digital Marketing and Development Andy Mitchell joined Randi Zuckerberg from Facebook’s marketing arm onstage at NewTeeVee Live in San Francisco today to share a little bit of the backstory of this cooperation.

The two tried to add social context to live news events during the months leading up to the election with an idea called “debating the debates.” Facebook had just launched its Facebook Connect platform, and both companies tried to have users watch the debates and exchange arguments online, signaling their allegiance for either candidate with a badge on their Facebook profile. Except that it didn’t work. Facebook Connect wasn’t ready to scale.

Worlded twitter lists

Worlded twitter lists

"But to me, the real question about Google Wave is not its technical excellence, but its practical..."

“
But to me, the real question about Google Wave is not its technical excellence, but its practical path forward in the enterprise. It reminded me of one of those rock bands tagged as a “critic’s favorite” that nevertheless never quite catches on with the general public.

That’s because Google Wave doesn’t simply augment and improve the way people work: It reinvents work processes fundamentally. To take advantage of all the cool capabilities of Wave’s real-time collaboration environment, you really have to live in Google’s mindspace. You have to embrace the idea of sharing and collaboration at the very center of the work process, and allow the values of organizational productivity to completely subsume the individual work product. How many people work like that?

Google says it’s been using Wave internally for months to great effect, and I don’t doubt it. Smart young innovative companies that thrive on disruption and have cultures that encourage an aggressive competition of new ideas will love, Love, LOVE Google Wave, in the same way that college radio stations love wry and jagged alternative music.
”

- Internet Evolution - Rob Salkowitz - Google May Not Catch a Wave

Wordled my twitter feed:

In conjunction with the relaunch of their website, CNN asked me to examine their web statistics and create a visual record of the site’s last 13 years. We were both interested in telling a larger story about the growth of the Internet and the public’s changing media habits through the lens of such an influential and heavily trafficked site.

The process started by determining what metrics might hold an interesting narrative, and which ones were available over the entire lifespan of the site. CNN was able to provide me with daily page views, the top 20 days for each year and the most popular pages on those days. I was also provided with monthly category views and lists of the nations visiting the site.

The spike chart of average weekly page views forms the centerpiece of the chart. The busiest 10 weeks are called out, and the events associated with the week are highlighted below the x-axis… along with other events of cultural significance or large week-over-week gains. I also tracked the absolute and relative growth of their site categories over time, and highlighted several unique metrics at the top of the chart, including the busiest and slowest days of the year, and the number of countries that visit the site (192 at last count). Finally, to put everything in context, I found milestones in the history of the Internet for each year which I placed along the bottom of the chart to create context for the narrative.

Ultimately, I think the most fascinating story here is the change in our news habits after September 11, 2001. After this day, a new and higher baseline for visits to the site is established, and the inference is that this event really established CNN.com and the greater Internet as a reliable, timely and indispensable source for news.

But Lehdonvirta’s thesis suggests that the fundamental drivers of virtual consumption are found in individuals’ social and hedonic motivations.

“People buy virtual goods for the same reasons as they buy material goods. In online spaces, virtual goods can function as markers of status, elements of identity and means towards ends in the same way as material consumer goods do in similarly contrived physical spaces,” says Lehdonvirta.
”

- Virtual Goods Offer An Alternative To Material Consumption As Social Lives Move To Online Networks

Sun shutters zembly http://bit.ly/3iQWAF

Sun shutters zembly http://bit.ly/3iQWAF
